The Joy Of Printmaking With Marvin Pauls: Part I

March 9, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm MST
$40

Discover the exciting world of printmaking: Create mini prints on a mini press! We will scratch images on a 1 ½” x 2 ¼” piece of plexiglass with a sharpened nail, creating a drypoint plate that will be inked intaglio and printed on a press that fits in your hand! WOW! Cool huh? (Don’t worry if you don’t understand the terms above, you will by the end of the class.)
What you will do:
Draw your own image that fits the plate you have selected. Scratch the image into the plate creating lines and values. Ink the plate, run it through the press, admire what you’ve done. Refine the image if you need to and reprint it.

What you need:
Image references help! KEEP IT SIMPLE. Bring your sketchbook with some small-ish drawings and some photos of intriguing things (phone images are fine): a plant, animal, or other simple objects, designs, or interesting doodles. Don’t forget a pencil, an alert mind, and an apron (or your clothes will get messy).

Level of experience desired:
Knowledge of value range achieved with lines, able to follow a series of directions, able to follow a list of
verbal instructions and the courage to ask for assistance if you forget something (the process of printmaking
can be exacting and it can be easy to mess things up for everyone if you aren’t paying attention).
During the first class we will go over the basics of printmaking, create the image, scratch it on the plexiglass,
ink it, and pull 3-5 prints from it. When everyone has printed several images we will all clean up.
During the second class we will have a short ten minute review, continue printing in black ink and then I’ll
introduce colored inks, and show and discuss some other hand coloring techniques.

Your Instructor: Marvin Pauls is a mixed media artist who also taught art at Hellgate High School for 29
years. Printmaking is his primary medium. He came up with a more involved version of this project for a
Printmaking class created during his tenure at Hellgate. After discovering the wonders of his mini press, it is
now so much easier to bring printmaking to the public! HUZZAH!
